NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. After her successful exhibition at the Documentation Centre, Anthee Ramlucken Sukai will present a collection of oil paintings and charcoal drawings at the Menzi Gallery at the BAT Centre from September 1 to 20. The exhibition will open on September 1 at 18h00 at part of the BAT Centre’s monthly Umgubho – Celebration. The works in this exhibition attempt to portray the part inside each individual in which resides a total silence which is sometimes difficult to comprehend or to explain to another. This could be the language of the soul that is so often unheeded by the individual. The generally taboo subject matter of sexuality and nudity is meant to reveal the vulnerability of the human being and to instigate sensitive thoughtfulness. While the figures are important, the spaces are more than technically and physically imperative. Together with the colour, they are intended to create a psychological moodiness. There is a play of tension between the inner person and the outer, between the various individuals and even with the objects and spaces. The use of the nude male as opposed to the clothed female is in itself also a role reversal as depicted in centuries of art and ultimately also adds to the tension albeit between viewer and artwork.
