NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. An exhibition of drawings by Nancy Moodley titled Living on the edge of Human Kind is running at the BAT Centre’s Democratic Gallery until April 30. A self-taught artist, Nancy has dedicated her life to recording the sufferings of human kind. Living on the Edge of Human Kind is her first collection of artworks made over a period of six months. This body of artworks is accompanied by poems that go together with the artworks. Her inspiration comes from reading the bible which she then interprets in the drawings. Some of the issues that are covered on these exhibition are slavery, discrimination, war, holocaust, genocide, plight of the refugees, famine, dreaded disease, poverty, abuse, crime and terrorism. She feels that through these experiences people should learn the horror of these injustices that has been afflicted to other people. With this exhibition, Nancy hopes to challenge the people to use their will positively in bringing about peace and joy in the world. She believes that people have the capacity, inner strength and courage to make the difference.
