NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Brian Dix is known for his ethnographic portraits. He makes pencil studies of his subjects before using oil paint to portray African people in traditional dress. Various tribal accessories like dress and beadwork interest and challenge the artist. His exhibition Portraits is running in the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg until January 13, 2002.
