The Zonnebloem Fine Art of Wine Competition is now in its fourth year. Aimed at promoting local art and directed at both emergent and established artists in South Africa, the competition offers a cash prize of R10,000. In addition, if the winner is attached to an art institute either as a student or teacher, his or her school will receive a further R3 000 to be spent on art materials. The winner will also be identified on the back label of the wine involved.

Artists are invited to create an artwork that can be incorporated into an existing label. The idea is to capture the mood and character of this year’s chosen wine, a 1997 Zonnebloem Shiraz. This is a full-bodied, richly coloured red wine with aromas of smokiness and spices. The wine has a velvety texture, enhanced by ageing in a combination of Nevers (French) and American oak. It is smooth on the palate and can be savoured for its mouth-filling flavours.
