The Friends of the Durban Art Gallery will hold their Annual General Meeting on the May 14 at 19h00 in the Lecture Theatre on the 1st Floor, of the Durban City Hall.

Virginia Mackenny, well-known artist and fine art lecturer at Technikon Natal, will give a talk titled Displays of Culture/Cultures of Display which includes some aspects of the art of installation in contemporary British galleries and draws on exhibitions which she saw in London last year.

"Long gone are the days when your average exhibition was a series of paintings hung on a wall presented to a viewer who was presumed to share the same cultural background as the artist,” Virginia explains. “Nowadays artists, engaging with the complexities of cultural globalisation, realise that the presentation or display of work is an important factor in generating the meaning of the work.”

The talk will be followed by drinks and refreshments and entrance is free. More details from DAG Director Carol Brown on (031) 311-2262
