An exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculpture for Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens will be curated and installed by Public Eye, a group of Cape Town artists who facilitate major art projects and events taking place in the public arena.

For the past two years, Public Eye has been deeply involved in the visual arts component of the Cape Town One City Many Cultures festivals and has also participated in international events. For the South African National Gallery, Public Eye presents the successful Soft Serve art events which has been instrumental in introducing a new audience to the SANG.

Following the success of shows of Zimbabwe stone sculptures in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Public Eye aims to extend the idea of outdoor sculpture by bringing into the Gardens especially commissioned contemporary works by invited South African artists from around the country, and possibly a selection of international artists as well.

It is envisaged that the exhibition of contemporary sculpture will run from January to March 2002 utilising two distinct areas of the Kirstenbosch Gardens. An outreach program will benefit previously disadvantaged art students and scholars and there is a possibility of an artist-in-residence component.
