Tribute to the late Meta Orton (born October 23, 1912) who passed away on January 15, 2001. Written by Eunice Thurlow, one of the original, and still active, members of the North Coast Art Group.

“To her many pupils Meta Orton leaves a legacy of sound foundations in drawing and painting through her diligent disciplines which meant a great deal to those who were taught by her in the North Coast Art Group which she founded as far back as 1969.

She taught in the "Artist's Workshop" next to The Natal Sharks Board where, through her integrity, she had obtained the use of the old Water Board premises and where a great deal of creative work was started...including a sculpture group.

Meta had a wonderful training in art at the Byham Shaw Academy in London, resulting in her work being accepted and hung in The Royal Academy of Art. We were very proud of her and all gleaned a lot from her knowledge of and dedication to art.

There was never a shortage of models because Meta would always hire the many out-of-work Africans that came to the "Workshop" to pose for us. While being forthright and determined, she was always very kindly disposed to all.

With the passing of Meta Orton, a most memorable era has passed from Umhlanga. In 1983 she wrote a book on her life and travels titled The World and Umhlanga Rocks. She will always be remembered.”
