The Durban Art Gallery invites original artwork on a postcard for their last exhibition to be held before the millenium. The postcards can be made in any medium but must conform to the standard postal size and bear a postmark. These cards will be auctioned for the acquisition budget of the Durban Art Gallery and they will feature on an exhibition of postcards preceding the auction in December 1999.

The Durban Art Gallery has no acquisition budget. This presents a major problem as this is possibly the most crucial time in South Africa's history with its transition to a new democracy and the inability to purchase works has had an impact on local, emerging artists. The Friends of the Durban Art Gallery have taken the initiative of the postcard auction to mobilise the international artistic community to assist in this worthy cause.

Copyright for publicity purposes rests with the Durban Art Gallery such as reproduction on websites, printed media, TV, etc. However, if an artist does not wish to accept these copyright terms, a signed declaration stating such should be enclosed. Prints of postacard are acceptable but a single edition must not exceed five. All cards must be postmarked and should bear the artist's name, address and contact numbers

All proceeds from auction will be used for the purchase of acquisitions for the Durban Art Gallery.

Start sending postcards right away - the final date for submission is November 1, 1999 (postcards may be sent on this date but should not bear a later postmark). Post to: Post-it, Durban Art Gallery, PO Box 4085, Durban, 4000. For details contact DAG director Carol Brown on 31-27-3006230 or email: brownc@durban.gov.za
