An exhibition of artist Coral Fourie’s colourful artwork titled Splinters from the Fire opens at the Alliance Française on September 13 at 18h00. The show will be on view at the Alliance gallery, 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside, until September 29.

Fourie places great importance on nature, which she sees as “between simple physical demands for shelter and food and the much more complex demands of the psychic life of an individual”. Aside from her love of nature, she sites people and “being wholly human” as the “main challenge and theme” in her work. The main inspiration of her art comes from the San people with their unique relationship to nature and her paintings certainly reflect the influence of Bushman work.

She has created simple representations with flattened perspective reminiscent of bushman pictographs. Although otherwise colourful, white lines dominate many of the paintings giving them a graphic, just-scratched in rock quality.

A special limited edition bilingual (English/French) book of San stories written in English and translated into French by Edouard Maunick will be available for sale during the show. It contains 20 black-and-white drawings and 12 colour reproductions of Coral Fourie’s work and costs R180.
