Marcella de Boom, who lives and works in Cullinan, Gauteng, is exhibiting acrylic paintings and smaller scale watercolours at the NSA Galleries in the Mezzanine gallery until June 1. These colourful works at first seem to take their cue from well known mythology but on closer scrutiny reveal a more subjective approach to invented fantasy narratives.

The artist states that "the painter is essentially different from the photographer – although taking the cue from ‘realism’, the artist are able to present more of his/her inner self". This “inward looking” results in a magic realism resembling painted scenes from a netherworld of impossibilities.
