Durban artist Kuben Pillay is exhibiting oil and acrylic paintings of imaginary landscapes at the African Art Centre.

Born in Durban in 1969, Kuben graduated with a MA (FA) (Cum Laude) in 1995 from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

His subject matter is the KZN landscape and plants. He is deeply influenced by the landscape painting tradition of the "Grahamstown School" as Professor Tom Matthews was one of his lecturers and was a proponent of this type of painting. Kuben responds to the landscape emotionally and feels that the landscape reflects something spiritual - spirituality not in the form of the divine, but an uncompromising attachment to nature.

The paintings are small and intimate and provide a space for the viewer for contemplation.

Kuben Pillay’s exhibition runs until May 30. The African Art Centre is now situated in Florida Road, More information on 031 312 3805 or 082 828 0211 or fax 031 312 3818.
