NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Etchings etc will host Together We Are One to mark the 14th anniversary of the gallery and to thank and publicly recognize the artists who have supported Etchings over the years. All the pieces on display will have been created especially for this exhibition by some of South Africa’s finest artists such as John Smith, Makiwa Mutomba, Marita Meyer, Shirley Howells, Zamani Makhanya, Charmaine Eastment and many others. The participating artists reflect the diversity and depth of art in South Africa - some are professional, some have an academic background, whilst others are self-taught. There is also adequate representation from both rural and urban areas, with subject matter from landscape to floral, abstract to portraits. The name and the idea for the exhibition, Together We are One, was born while watching South Africans across the world coming together to watch the victorious Springboks in the Rugby World Cup. The artists’ interpretation of the theme will aim to showcase a diversity of expression as well as a variety of techniques and creative approaches in interpreting the theme of togetherness. The exhibition is being hosted by Etchings’ Garnet and Wendy Cornell, who have been owners of the gallery since its inception in 1993. They have been working closely with the artists in preparation for the exhibition. “The exhibition is a celebration of the diversity of South Africans, and is designed to install positivity in this magnificent country and all it has to offer,” says Wendy. Together We Are One runs from December 1 until 15 at the Etchings etc. gallery in Park Boulevard Centre in Browns Drift Road (off Riverside Road). Enquiries on 031 563 6431.
