NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Opening at the NSA Galleries on May 16 to run until June 3, is Blur – South African Realities which deals with the blurring between cultures. Langa Magwa will present a sculptural installation of animal hides, burnishing and found objects. The life size animal hides (cattle) refer to African traditions that are the artist’s heritage with specific reference to scarification and marking. The hides transcend the traditional cattle idiom to become powerful illuminations of cultural identities found and lost. Vinyl Diamonds offers a collection of poetry and colour photography that explores clubland in Durban at the end of the 20th century as seen by two hedonistic post-apartheid whites. This exhibition is accompanied by photography by Brigitta Gaylard and poetry by Kevin Payne. Be at the opening on May 16 at 16h00 – it’s bound to be a major happening! There will be a body art/wearable art competition inviting a fantastic fusion that is outrageous and art-rageous, sexy, contemporary, flashy and fleshy. “Cult or gossamer, furry, funky, fake. It’s your choice,” says NSA curator Bren Brophy. Just be there dressed or undressed (body paint, tattoos, etc.) and there will be a prize for the most blurred body. Details from Bren on (031) 22-2293.
