Ukucwebezela : To Shine is the title of a new exhibition due to open at the African Art Centre in Florida Road.

The exhibition comprises ceramics collected by Elizabeth Perrill (Fulbright-Hays Scholar, USA) and deals with 'Potters in the marketplace: isiZulu Ceramic Urbanization in KwaZulu-Natal'.

Works on display were all created between 2005 and 2007. This exhibition gives a snapshot into the production and lives of ceramic artists who are pushing the boundaries of the 'traditional' and exploring what it means to make an aesthetically beautiful 'Zulu' vessel.

Some 21 artists will exhibit new ceramic works alongside Elizabeth Perrill's research collection. The artists include The Nala family potters, The Magwaza family potters, Azolinah Mncube, Peni Gumbi, Clive Sithole, Ntombi Nala, Simpiwe Belle, Muziwandile Gigaba and more.

Artists featured range in ages between 23 and 80 years of age. They come from both rural and urban walks of life, but all produce ceramics inspired by the traditionally women’s art of beer pot, or utshwala, ceramics.

Ukucwebezela: To Shine will be officially opened by Eugene Young, US Consul General, Durban, at 17h30 on May 9. The exhibition then runs until June 9. It offers a perfect opportunity to view and acquire important collectible Zulu ceramics by both master potters and new young talents!

The African Art Centre is now situated at 94 Florida Road, Durban. Phone 031 312 3804/5.

Elizabeth Perrill will give a talk on her research at 12h00 at The African Art Centre on May 9 - all are welcome.
