NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The African Art Centre & South African History Online will present the Durban book launch of Revisions: Expanding the Narrative of South African Art. “The artists whose work appear in this book date from the late 19th century to the last decade of the 20th century. They lived through and experienced South Africa’s most degrading - as well as her most uplifting – historical moments, “ says Dr Pallo Jordan, Minister of Arts & Culture in response to the publication. “The work depicts the sensibilities of communities in transition; from pre-colonial pastoral life to life in the cities; from the paternalism of the Union Government to the studied repression of the 60s and 70s; from the brutalities of Apartheid to the high hopes of a young democracy. The works on display are as significant a historical record as any other rendered in the written word or in music.” 18 of the artists appearing in the collection went through the African Art Centre. The exhibition will be opened by Dr Sivi Gounden at 17h30 on February 14 and will run until February 24. The African Art Centre is now situated in Florida Road.
