The Democratic Gallery at the BAT Centre is currently hosting an exhibition titled Reflection in which Neena Sewsunker and Bobby Chetty explore the things that they engage in everyday life.

Educator Neena and Bobby, a retired driver, are two artists from Phoenix, north of Durban. These friends and fellow artists work with different mediums. Neena is a glass painter and Bobby works with wood sculpture.

Neena, an educator for five years, identifies the artistic talent in her learners. Asian Bride is a glass painting that was inspired by the design of her grandparents’ bridal jewels. The contrasting image of the jewels when compared to the tin home that her grandparents lived in, fascinated her.

Running from January 12 to 31 in the BAT Centre’s Democratic Gallery, Reflection takes a closer look at living in South Africa. The works are expressive and sincere with inspiration drawn from observation and tradition. Fusion of diverse cultures in South Africa, allow these local artists to create a unique form of expression.
