NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The South African Jewish Museum has an exciting lecture programme to accompany the exhibition Journeys to the Interior: Unseen Works by Irma Stern 1929 -1939. More than forty oils, pastels and sketches are on show. Many of them are previously unseen and were produced by Irma Stern on her African travels in the 1930s. The lectures focus on the deeper aspects of the exhibition. Hayden Proud, art curator at the South African National Gallery, will lecture on August 31 at 11h00. Degenerate Art was the term used to describe art that did not support Nazi Germany’s ideals. The Nazis launched a destructive campaign against art they designated ‘degenerate’, including abstract, Cubist, Expressionist, and Surrealist art. The artists were reviled as exponents of avant-garde art movements that were considered intellectual, elitist, foreign, and socialist-influenced. Jewish artists such as Marc Chagall were singled out for special condemnation. More information from Natacha da Costa on 021 465 1546 or e-mail: natacha@sajewishmuseum.co.za
