The first Red Eye of 2006 presents Red Eye goers with the opportunity to explore the depths of the city in Red Eye: Access Denied which explores previously undisclosed spaces in Durban’s majestic City Hall building for one night only on May 26.

Concealed by elaborate cast-iron gates, previously restricted niches are to be opened to public view. Artists will utilise the architecture, together with video installation, atmospheric lighting, dance performance and fashion installations.

Red Eye is an art “Happening” which takes places periodically in and around the Durban Art Gallery hosted by the Durban Art Gallery and Red Eye Committee to showcase new, extraordinary, interesting and emerging performance art, visual art and installations – often that are theme and site-specific.

Contributing artists include Tessa Comrie, Carlos Francisco, Roger Miller, Vaughn Sadie, Mark Meyer, Everett Duarte, Mlu Zondi and Ntando Cele and collaboration by Caroline van Wyk, Ben Haskins, Marcel Duvenage and Justin Lagesse. Featured performances are Siwela Sonke, Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, Amajita, Umkhumbane Blues and King Zorro.

Red Eye: Access Denied will start in the Durban Art Gallery at 18h00 and, with the necessary permissions and hardhats provided, exploration of the restricted space will be granted.
