NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Lola Frost lectures in Art Theory at the Technikon Natal Fine Art Department in Durban for some months of each year and works in her studio in Canterbury for the remaining eight months. Her first exhibition in Britain titled Pulse recently opened at the Keynes College Art Gallery at the University of Kent in Canterbury. It will run until March 26. While ostensibly landscapes, Lola describes these new works as taking the viewer “into a saturated and contemplative space. This unnamed space, which is perhaps best called a "more than" space, can be compared with music, where sonorous reds, purples and blues come alive under the quivering rhythms of intricate and obsessive marks. The effects are tender, overwhelming and strange. Here one becomes more that oneself.” Most of the works are linked to a denigrated femininity with natural references having bodily associations - as thresholds, protrusions and orifices. These pulsing images challenge this power relation and instead re-figure desire and open identity. Contact Lola Frost at lola@frost.u-net.com
