Today we live in a throwaway society – where it’s the norm to hurl on the rubbish dump a fairly expense item of technology because to repair it would cost more than a new one. In any case, by the time it’s reached the throwaway stage, the equipment’s probably out of date, anyway!

However, there’s always someone who can make use of things that people discard. The Umcebo Trust’s director, Robin Opperman, is a veritable magpie when it comes to spotting items that can be used in the making of the Trust’s splendid beaded and mosaic banners.

Got any old costume jewellery you want to get rid of? “It is just solid gold when it comes to the banners,” explains Robin.

Robin has also indicated that he can make use of old CD’s – artSMart is sending his way a stack of now useless CD’s carrying press releases or non-confidential material.

If you have any jewellery or old CD’s to give to the Umcebo Trust, contact Robin Opperman on 031 305 3408 or 083 7933408, fax 031 305 3408 or e-mail: robino@polka.co.za or visit http://home.telkomsa.net/tabby
