NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The African Art Centre is to host Family and Friends, a solo exhibition by Humphrey Armitage. Born in Greyville in Durban in 1951, Humphrey Armitage started drawing from a young age. He is currently living in Redhill where he has a plant nursery, "Nursery at 207 Blackburn Rd". In 1969, he had a motorbike accident and was unconscious for 14 days, caused by cerebral contusion. He underwent surgery after doctors found a blood clot on the left hand side of his brain. After his operation, he suffered from headaches even after reading only three lines of print but did not suffer from headaches when he was drawing. Armitage's mother bought T-shirts for him to draw on and sell. He attended George Campbell Technical College as well as a year-long course in drawing and painting at Nanda Sooben Animation School in 1998. Armitage plays the guitar and has played in a band. His work has appeared on group exhibitions at the Durban Art Gallery and the African Art Centre. Opening on October 19, Family and Friends features pastels and oil paintings. More information on 031 304 7915.
