Sasol’s 2005 New Signatures Competition has been won jointly by artists Elmarie Costandius from Somerset West and Johannesburg-based Sean Slemon. They were awarded the first prize of R50,000, to be shared by the winners, by Sasol chief executive Pat Davies at a ceremony at the Pretoria Art Museum.

Costandius’ winning entry was titled 11 Official Languages, while Slemon’s work was named Maquette (the mountain premises). Slemon also won the R10,000 Judges Award.

The winning works were selected from more than 100 final entries by adjudicators Willem Boshoff, Franci Cronjé, Teresa Lizamore, Churchill Madikida and Kathryn Smith. Independent judges Kwezi Gule and Walter Oltmann were responsible for making the Judges Award.

There were no KwaZulu-Natal artists among the merit award winners.
