The Blue Caterpillar Gallery presents an exhibition by a husband and wife duo Modern Art in Sudan which captivates the rich heritage of Sudan through their contemporary style.

These established artists were forced to leave their country because of the political situation and spent much of their time in various countries in Europe. They exhibited successfully in France, England, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Italy. Their works are on permanent display in leading galleries in these countries.

Hussein and Raja now reside in KwaZulu-Natal and Hussein continues to further his studies at The University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.

Modern Art in Sudan is a rich synthesis of heritage and new global-modernism or post- modernism, in which local influences are strengthened by the experience of Diaspora in the west. The work of these two artists reflects cross currents of ancient and contemporary Africa as well as Arabic, Islamic and Western influences. Their works are a testimony of the sophistication and maturity of Sudanese artists.

The exhibition runs from July 15 to August 15. More information from Blue Caterpillar Gallery on 033 387 1356 or e-mail: art@butterflies.co.za
