Blue Caterpillar Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is to host an exhibition by Johannesburg-based artist, Alphen Mntimbane. This talented artist makes a living from his art and captures what means the most to him. Working in watercolour and oils, he paints township people whom he knows well, either walking in streets or engaging in conversation with another. He also has a fascination for old buildings: “I like to capture buildings and old houses,” he says, “because they will one day be demolished.”

Born in 1948, he has been an artist since the age of 17. He attended Art School from 1971 until 1974 at Jubilee Social Centre, Soweto. He travels regularly throughout South Africa promoting and selling his work. He painted the wine label for the “Cindy” collection and many of his works are found in notable companies all over South Africa. His work has also been exhibited in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC and North Carolina.

The exhibition will run from April 19 until May19. More information from Amanda on 033-3871356 or e-mail: art@butterflies.co.za
