NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. A special auction of paintings and artifacts will be held at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on March 3 at 18h00. The auction follows the closing of the Diana Stanley Memorial Exhibition which features the works of the late Mtunzini-based artist, Diana Stanley, who died last year. Works up for auction will include paintings and mainly southern African artefacts from her private collection such as beadwork, basketry, ceramics, wearing and semi-precious stones many of which served as inspiration for her work. Diana Stanley studied fine art at Technikon Natal (now the Durban Institute of Technology), the Central School of Art in London and the Academie de la Grande Chamiere in Paris. She held a number of solo exhibitions and was the first white woman invited to exhibit at the African Art Centre in Durban in 1999. Her work evokes a physical and spiritual response to the southern African landscape, particularly Namibia, where she lives for some years. Paintings and artifacts may be viewed at www.auctionworld.co.za
