NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Running at the Durban Art Gallery until December 5 is the Emergence exhibition. Sponsored by the Standard Bank, it tracks developments in the practice, presentation and interpretation of visual art in South Africa over the last 25 years. The collection has been structured to resemble a conceptual journey that takes the viewer through this quarter century of major global and regional change to eventually show the distinctive South African art that has now emerged. Covering electronic media such as the inception of television broadcasting in South Africa to the technology explosion of the internet, Emergence features such well-known artists as Jackson Hlungwane, Penny Siopis and William Kentridge as well as lesser- known artists like Albert Chauke and Sizakele Mchunu. There are 150 works drawn from major public institutions and private collections around South Africa and guiding text is available as well as a list of publications on South African art from 1975 to 1999. Also on site is an extensive database of artists' names and chronology.
