NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The African Art Exhibition is to host the first exhibition of the Richmond Farm Embroidery Group this month. Titled Okungijabulisayo - What Makes Me Happy, it features the work of the nine women who participated in the Amazwi Abesifazane - Voices of Women Memory Cloth Project sponsored by CREATE AFRICA SOUTH ORGANISATION which is a project initiated by Andries Botha. SIZA Marketing Company is a project sponsored by Susan Dvora who is based in the U.S.A. The members of the Richmond Farm Embroidery group, range in age from early 20's to mid 60's and meet regularly to help each other improve their skills, create beautiful thread “paintings” and tapestries expressing the joy in their lives and to share dreams of self employment opportunities from their art. The group members are Ntombikona Hadebe, Delisile Khanti, Xolile Ndlovu, Thulisile Ngcobo, Grette Nkosi, Spindile Nkosi, Themba Sibiya, Zibuyisile Pretty Zulu and Tholakele Zuma. Many of the women are related by marriage, and are nurturing their first babies and a few are grandmothers. All are unemployed and grapple with extreme poverty and have lost family members from AIDS, but when these nine women meet, the room is filled with laughter and hope for a better tomorrow.
