The Umcebo exhibition is the result of a year of collaboration between the Alliance Française de Durban and Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicaped through its visionary art teacher, Robin Oppermann. Having been on show at the Alliance in Durban, it is now on its way to Cape Town before it takes off on a longer journey.

“I felt a twinge of sorrow watching the exhibition leave for the Alliance Française de Cape Town,” says Alliance director Jean-François Jacquemin. “Bonds have been established and it is always hard to let a successful project go. But this superb collection will be shown at the Alliances Françaises of Mitchell’s Plain, Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown festival, then Johannesburg.

“Thereafter the exhibition will go to France, in Nantes (International cosmopolis Centre to celebrate the twinning of the towns of Durban- Nantes and the Jazz festival Les Rendezvous de l’Erdre at the end of August. The exhibition will probably move to the hotel de ville in Paris.
