NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has initiated a Public Art Programme as a central element of its strategy to revitalize parts of the city, specifically Constitution Hill, Newtown and Braamfontein which collectively are known as the Johannesburg Cultural Arc. South African artists, crafters and designers were invited to submit expressions of interest for the development of public art-works for the Constitution Hill Campus. At the same time, artists were offered an opportunity to play a part in selecting the adjudicators by making nominations for the Cultural Arc Adjudication Panel. Short-listed artists were then asked to submit detailed proposals that told the story of the site and celebrate, commemorate, acknowledge and present related themes in a way that will engage visitors and draw them to the area. All entries will be on display in March 2004, when the development opens to the public selected works will be commissioned and installed thereafter. More information from the JDA website on www.jda.org.za
