NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Alliance Française de Durban is presenting a photographic exhibition by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The theme of the exhibition is a look at the lives of the cane cutters of Reunion Island. It encompasses the Stella Matutina sugar mill which closed down in 1979 and the social background of all who were involved and affected by the closure. This exhibition is a symbol of the way they look back into their former lives. These are portraits of people who had a strong sense of belonging. The eager, earnest eyes tell about the mill, its smells and its noises. In 1986, the Regional Council of Reunion purchased the mill and converted it into a museum of agricultural and industrial life. In 1994, a tribute to the mill workers was made by the photographs of Arthus-Bertrand. And these are the photographs that will be on display at the Alliance Française de Durban. Gallery hours 09h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 17h00, Monday to Friday at the Alliance Française, 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside, Durban. Further information from Marianne on 031 312 9582.
