NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The NSA Galleries will present Fibre Art ‘99 in the its Mezzanine Gallery from the end of this week. The exhibition has been curated by Jean Powell and will be opened by architect John Frost on October 17 at 16h00 to run until November 4. Contemporary fibre art has developed into a rich visual language. Historically, fibre artists used techniques such as quilting, stitching, basketry, printing and fabric manipulation but new techniques have been added to contemporary fibre art such as paper-making, painting, photography and computer-generated design, resulting in a rich and varied exhibition. The Durban Art Gallery has collected fibre art for the last 20 years and now has one of the best collections in South Africa. This is the third Fibre Art exhibition hosted by the NSA, the previous ones being held in 1989 and 1994. Among the fibre artists taking part are well-known names such as Rosalie Dace, Jeanette Gilks, Isaac Nkosinathi Khanyile, Fiona Kirkwood, Jutta Faulds, Sally Scott, Roy Starke, Juliette Armstrong and Odette Tolksdorf. Fibre Art ‘99 runs in conjunction with the Heleen Verwey exhibition which will be on show in the NSA Main Gallery.
