The Durban Art Gallery is one of the most visited galleries in the country and a large proportion of visitors are schoolchildren. This percentage has increased since the annual Matric Art Exhibition and the annual Unilever School Art Competition which is organised in conjunction with the gallery.

As a result of this and in order to add value to the schools visit, the Friends of the Durban Art Gallery have launched a new project for Grades 8-12. This consists of a coloured chart with pictures of 21 works from the permanent collection of the DAG.

Alongside are questions about each work which the learner and teacher can use to open discussions on the art. These Artcharts will be given free of charge to teachers and learners in conjunction with a visit to the gallery.

The project has been sponsored in its entirety by the Unilever Foundation in an attempt to encourage education initiatives in the KZN region and to support the Durban Art Gallery's public programmes.

Zinhle Nkosi from Unilever handed over the sponsorship cheque to Marianne Meijer, The Friends chairperson, earlier this week. Artchart was conceived by Bren Brophy, Brigitte Maingard and Jenny Stretton.
