The research exhibition for 1999 of the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg focuses on the work of teachers and artists who studied at the Ndaleni Art School near Richmond. The school, started in 1949, was affiliated to the Ndaleni Teacher's Training College and students were trained primarily to teach art in primary schools.

Many Pietermaritzburg residents will recall the annual exhibition of Ndaleni work at the Methodist Church Hall where a vast selection of wood carving, ceramics and prints went on sale. Sadly, the Ndaleni Art School closed its doors in 1981, when the primary school art teaching programme was officially moved to Pretoria. The exhibition runs in the main exhibition room until November 7.
