NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. De Wet Wraight’s ShOwOff is running at the Royal Hotel’s newly opened intimate supper theatre, Backstage, for a short season opening on Wednesday (September 22). ShOwOff features seasoned performer De Wet Wraight, well-known for his national appearances in shows such as the Rocky Horror Show, Cliff Richards, Elvis - a musical extravaganza, as well as a seven week run as Widow Twankie in Aladdin at the Baxter Theatre and in Elton at the Playhouse Cellar. ShOwOff shows off De Wet’s talents, both vocal and otherwise, featuring a rip-off array and personal interpretation of famous artists such as Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Marlene Dietrich, Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Elton John, Sonja Herholdt, Shirley Bassey, Cher and Celine Dion to name but a few. By means of cleverly designed costumes, De Wet has succeeded in capturing the flamboyance and “over the top” or amusing eccentricities of these artists. As a result, the show moves at a fast pace, featuring all the well known and popular numbers, including Barcelona, Joe Crocker’s You Can Leave Your Hat On and numerous Elvis and Elton John numbers – the latter ideally suiting De Wet’s vocal style. ShOwOff is directed by Gareth Kenna and choreographed by Kevin Ellis with costumes designed by Gareth Kenna and constructed by Neil Stuart Harris.
