NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Durban Arts present free lunch hour concerts every Wednesday on the City Hall steps which start at 13h00. The April concert programme is as follows: Apr 7: Young Olive, a gospel group from Chesterville consisting of 10 singers, four instrumentalists and a dance troupe. Apr 14: Induku 'Ziyashisa is a maskanda band with three dancers and singers as well as a bass player, lead guitarist, concertina and drums. Apr 21: Ababekezeli. This is a group from eNtuzuma who play umxhoba nyawo music, similar to the Soul Brothers sound. They have five singers and dancers and a full band to pump out a strong sound. Apr 28: "Izangoma has been going strong since 1982," says Patrick Zungu, who co-ordinates the lunch-hour concerts, "and it's a group not to be missed." Izangoma's music is composed by lead guitarist Dumisani Luthuli who got together with the late Cyprian Khuzwayo (keyboard player) in 1982 to start the band. The rest of the seven-piece group comprises Mfaniseni Mavimbela, Douglas Msomi, Nyoni Makhaye, Bheki Khalala, William Nene and Sbusiso Mngadi who between them play drums, bass guitar, keyboards, lead guitar and percussion. The group recorded Ucingo under the recording wing of Mbongeni Ngema and appeared at the SADDC Festival in Zimbabwe in 1995 and in Mozambique in 1997.
