NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Pietermaritzburg music lovers can end the year on a high note when Music Revival offers The Mixed Bag, an eclectic mix of music in one concert. Contrasted with vibey jazz transcriptions will be the authentic sound of a harpsichord, the type of baroque instrument for which composers such as Bach and Handel wrote music. Pianist Christopher Duigan plays various pieces on harpsichord and piano in a programme that also includes Spanish moods by Albeniz as well as music by lesser-known composers John Field (who greatly influenced Chopin) and Frederic Mompou (once hailed as the true successor of Debussy). Also included will be pieces by women composers and there’ll be tangos and Gershwin songs as the composer performed them. Christopher Duigan has a few other attractions up his sleeve: “Look out for the surprise guest musicians - a slightly bizarre combination!” he says. The Mixed Bag takes place on December 30 at 19h30 at live@35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg. Tickets R40 include sherry, coffee and biscuits. Booking essential - phone (033) 342-3051 or e-mail chris@musicrevival.co.za
