For the past three months, entertainer Peter Maxwell has been conducting a fund-raising tour for the Grand Lodge of Natal which has taken him from Newcastle to Richard's Bay, from Scottburgh to Durban and back again.

He has appeared in 33 shows at 33 venues to standing ovations and raised over R60 000 for various charities. “I have also slept in nearly 33 different accommodation outlets, my sponsored Nissan car and my sponsored Yamaha Clavinova piano doing sterling services,” he says in his usual cheery manner. “I have met lovely outgoing people, kindness and laughter, the latter probably generated from yours truly but most times, people still had a sense of humour out there.”

Peter Maxwell is now winging his way to Tenerife to investigate the possibility of working at a new four-star hotel there, returning to London on September 26. Thereafter, he hopes to plan a return visit to South Africa and find accommodation for six months. “I want to play and sing and whatever else will keep me happy and invade the miserable souls of others when they are dull and down and derelict.
