BHASOBHA (article first published : 1999-06-8)

Bhasobhais a musical play written by Vusi Shashu that explores all aids-related issues as well as those that put youngsters of today at the risk of contracting Aids, such as substance abuse, ignorance, peer group pressure and unfounded myths.

The preview of Bhasobhawill be held on June 18 at 13h00 in the Playhouse Sanlam Loft. “We would like to perform in institutions, schools, community halls, prisons, rural areas, mines, hostels and other places with the purpose of educating our youth as well as the older ones about the HIV/Aids virus,” says Dedicated Artists director Vusi Shashu. “In these challenging days, it is important that we join forces to consider every possible means to combat HIV/Aids through every possible means.”

A good means of communication is through edu-tainment (education through entertainment). “The Bhasobha traditional drama looks at community awareness via entertainment,” adds Vusi. “Aids doesn’t discriminate between the public or the private sector yet it affects the social and economic enhancement of this country.”

In order to carry their message further, Dedicated Artists are looking for sponsors for their project and invite potential sponsors to their performance at the Playhouse. “We’d also like to invite the SRC’s of the universities and technikons who are involved in cultural activities as well as pastors and people of high profile,” says Vusi.

Dedicated Artists would like to take their show to industrial firms and invite company PRO’s to come to the performance. The eight-member cast and three-member band as well as the stage manager and artistic director are not employed and are therefore free to tour with the production.

Dedicated Artists receives funding from the Durban Arts Association. If you’re interested in learning more about Bhasobha, phone Gugu Myeni on 083 428-1148 or 304-6381 (o).
