NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Alliance Française presents the Meddy Gerville Trio in its third Soirée Jazz of the year. The concert will be held on September 15 at 19h30 at 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside. Young composer, singer and pianist Meddy Gerville hails from Reunion Island. Playing jazz standards and his own compositions, he has been noted for his brilliant technique and breathless tempos. When a French reporter asked him to describe his music, the pianist replied that it was “not avant-garde, or experimental” - that he would leave to the “Parisian intellos”. He rather aims to make music from his home known through jazz in a musical cross-fertilisation. This he does by marrying Reunion Island “maloya” rhythms with jazz. Fittingly, his debut album put together in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery entitled, Malavoi Marronage (1998). Alain Jean-Marie, who played at the Alliance in July, also participated on this album. Completing the Meddy Gerville trio are Lala (bass) and Max Dalleau (percussion). To book phone the Alliance on (031) 312-9582.
