Friends of Music will present the Jerusalem String Quarter on September 22 at the SABC, Old Fort Road at 19h45. The Jerusalem Quartet, all in their early twenties, have already established a reputation as one of the most interesting and dynamic quartets of their generation.

Founded within the framework of the Young Musicians’ Group of the Jerusalem Music Centre and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation in co-operation with the Conservatory of the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance, they gave their first concert in 1993 in Jerusalem.

The quartet has recently been selected by the BBC for their New Generations Artists scheme under which they are being offered numerous opportunities over a two-year period across the BBC Network to develop their considerable talents. They will perform a mixture of concerts and studio recordings throughout the United Kingdom.

They appear regularly in London’s Wigmore Hall and their recent concerts there have both been broadcast live on Radio 3. They have recorded a CD for the BBC Music Magazine of Beethoven, Haydn and Shostakovich and will be making a debut CD for EMI in November 2000 of works by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

The Friends of Music programme of quartet music includes Haydn’s Opus 76, No 5, Tchaikovsky No 1 in D Op. 11 and Shostakovich, No 3 in F, Op. 73. Book at Computicket.
