As far as musical projects go, the Aquarian Guitar Quartet which is to play at the BAT Cafe in Durban on May 19 and 20, has a matchless pedigree, featuring as it does a collaboration between four of South Africa's premier guitarists - Greg Georgiades, Syd Kitchen, Tony Cox and Steve Newman. While the names Steve Newman (Tananas), and Tony Cox are automatically synonymous with brilliant acoustic guitar playing, Syd Kitchen is more known for his tributes with Amakool and Greg Georgiades is perhaps the lesser known. Kitchen and Georgiades are two outstanding guitarists/composers and have individually released a string of CD’s of uncompromising and beautiful music.

It was only a matter of time before the Aquarian Quartet came into existence as all four brilliant musicians share the star sign of Aquarius. Tony Cox and Steve Newman were born on January 24 and 25 respectively and coincidentally sharing the same second name of Jeffrey. Syd Kitchen was born on February 14 and Greg Georgiades on February 15. That surely makes for some kind of cosmic power!

The AGQ will be using nylon and steel string guitars, fretless acoustic bass and Greg’s speciality, the Urd, to create music that runs the gamut from classical jazz through contemporary sounds with Arabic, Mauritian, African and Spanish influences. Shows start at 21h30 and tickets are R30 at the door. Don’t miss this one!
