NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. David Hewitt is one of South Africa's legendary classical guitarists. Trained under the French maestro Narciso Yepes in the 70’s, David soon developed a respected reputation in the music world and his duo performances with Tessa Ziegler are legendary. By incorporating indigenous African tunes and themes within a classical interpretation, he was responsible for introducing and exposing this musical heritage to many all over the world. David Hewitt now suffers from Alzheimer's disease. At age 52 he is one of the youngest people with this disease. He no longer plays guitar, and his medical condition requires ongoing care. The Centre for Creative Arts at the University of Natal had been in the process of organising the 6th Guitars for Africa event (in association with 3rd Ear Music), when they learned of David's condition. David has performed in two memorable Guitars for Africa concerts and all the musicians booked agreed to go ahead with the concert in honour of David's contribution to local music. The two concerts will be held at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on May 4 and 5 at 19h30. The proceeds from will be donated to Wendy Hewitt, David's wife, for his care and medical expenses. The Centre for Creative Arts, 3rd Ear Music, the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and all the musicians will provide their services and facilities free of charge. Only essential expenses - travel, accommodation, the programme brochure and the placing of posters - will be paid for. Artworks, Art Printers, Musikland and Publicity Matters have also kindly donated skills, services and equipment. The Alzheimer's and Related Dementias Association (ARDA) will distribute information about the disease at the concerts. At least eight selected guitar players will perform each evening. David’s long-time friend Tessa Ziegler will make a special trip to Durban for the event. Other participants will include d'Gary, the virtuoso guitarist from Madagascar, Sandile Shange, Leandros Stavrou, Nibs van der Spuy, Madala Kunene, Ken E Henson, Dave Birch, Mageshen Naidoo, Demi Fernandez, Alan Judd, Bongani Sokhela, Shiyani Ngcobo, Mike de Jager and others. The special format of Guitars for Africa offers a musical “safari” around South Africa. It also provides an opportunity to witness a unique presentation of top guitarists and support a worthy cause. Tickets R25. More details from the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on (031) 260-2296 or the Centre for Creative Arts (031) 260-2506.
