NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Head for Live at Y2K on the East Coast Radio "Home of the Hits" stage at Y2K, 112 Umbilo Road on May 22 and expect nothing but classy regional rocket noise when Durban group Amakool brings its unique music to Y2K and Durban for the first time. Their multi-instrumental talents and collective experience (Utensils, Scooter's Union, Arapaho) combine to create a sound that defies categorisation. Booked for the Grahamstown and Oppikoppi Festivals, the group looks forward to the impending release of its EP Amakoologik. The group features Syd Kitchen, Wesley Gibbens, Nux Schwartz, Greg Leisegang and Roly Struckmeyer Amakool will be supported by one of Durban’s longest serving groups, Halcyon. Playlisted on East Coast Radio with their debut release in 1998, the group includes Mercury correspondent Clayton Montgomery on bass. An interesting twist to the evening will be the appearance on stage of Siphiwe Zulu and Trevor Makhoba. Better known as two of Durban’s top visual artists, they have been jamming together for a number of years and now wish to record their material. They will perform a short set with guitarist Mshaks Gasa and bass player Bernard Mdaweni. Doors open at 21h00 and tickets are R20.
