NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Imvuselelo Traditional Show is a three-day musical celebration of Freedom Day 2000 taking place in the 1200-seat Playhouse Opera Theatre on April 27, 28 and 29. Hosted by Caesar Ngcobo, the five concerts will feature top maskanda artists Phuz’Ekhemisi, Mfazomnyama, Lahlumlenze, Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Amaponi and Thwalofu Namankentshane, as well as several supporting acts. The shows will mark the start of a youth development campaign which aims to build a top-class recording studio in KZN where youth will also be taught Zulu dance, traditional musical instruments and composition. Caesar Ngcobo, Managing Director of Caesar & Associates, believes the shows as well as the long-term campaign will result in significant economic development, increased social investment in KwaZulu-Natal and a boost for the tourism industry. He also believes that the traditional form of maskanda conveys positive messages. “It is, therefore,” he says, “the perfect musical vehicle for communicating messages about important issues such as AIDS awareness, community development, peace and reconciliation in line with government’s objectives in these fields.” Spoornet and Zetachem are the major sponsors of the event, while the mayors of the cities have shown support of the venture. Performance on April 27 (13h00 and 19h00), April 28 (19h00) and April 29 (13h00 and 19h00). Tickets R50 (10% discount for group bookings of 20 or more tickets). Book at Computicket or www.computicket.com. For credit card bookings, call Dial-A-Seat on (031) 369 9444 or TicketLine (after hours) on (031) 304 2753.
