NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Weaving, a highly successful production that features top Afrikaans singing star Rina Hugo and the Drakensberg Boys' Choir, was sold out within two weeks of the booking opening for its first performance at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival. The production is now touring South Africa but will return to KZN to appear in the annual Music in the Mountains Festival which takes place in the Drakensberg from April 27 to 30. Weaving represents the first soloist-with-choir production for the DBC. The programme features a selection of popular light-classic music, such as all time favourites from musicals like Chess, Sound of Music, Les Misérables and Pirates of Penzance alongside popular pieces of African music. All the items have been arranged for Rina and the DBC and are "woven" together with a Weaving Song and narration, giving the production a romantic and multi-cultural feel. It is also the first time that Rina Hugo has performed African music on stage. Specially commissioned for |Weaving is Take me to the Highest Mountain is a composition by Deon Roberts which mixes Western and African sounds and text. This work promises to become a new favourite to most of Rina's and DBC fans. Also featured in the show is the poetry of Rien Joubert who has written the text of hit songs for many South African artists. Choral direction is by Christian Ashley-Botha and Rudolf de Beer with percussion arrangements by Elma Swanepoel. More details from Ronèl Henning or Carien Marais at Private Bag X20, Winterton 3340.
