NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Senior drama students of Crawford College, La Lucia, will present well-known Dan Goggin's musical comedy Nunsense at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from March 30 to April 1. Starring five of the schools' most talented students - Lesley Brandon, Sarah Brandon, Caryn van Rooyen, Gillian College and Inge Koekemoer, the show is directed by Durban based theatre producer, Gareth Kenna, who is also Head of the Crawford La Lucia drama department. All of the girls have had professional theatre experience. Lesley and Sarah Brandon have performed in The Sound of Music, Oliver and The Pirates of Penzance. Lesley also appearing in Handel's Messiah. Kenna co-produced the critically acclaimed adult pantomimes Sinderella and Aladdin, both of which played to packed houses in the Playhouse Cellar, as well as the De Wet Wraight's one man show ShowOff, which has toured the country and just completed its third run in Durban. Nunsense was a "smash hit", when it was first produced by the same team last year, playing to standing ovations and capacity houses. Set in a convent, the story revolves around five nuns in a convent whose fellow sisters died of botulism after eating "suspect" soup. In order to raise money to bury the dead sisters, the Mother Superior decided to put on a talent show. In the meantime, how are the five surviving nuns to deal with the bodies of their dead sisters? Accompanied by a four-piece band, the show contains more than 15 songs in a wide range of musical styles, such as A Couple of Sisters, I Could Have Gone to Nashville, Growing up Catholic and I want to be a Star. Nunsense runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from March 29 to April 1 at 19h30. Tickets at R30 at Computicket. For a special discounted rate for schools, contact Sharon on 083 292-5324. Durban audiences will remember an earlier production of “Nunsense” produced by Pieter Torien.
