Challenging the assumption that classical music is “elitist and could be enjoyed only by a privileged minority”, well-known broadcaster Rodney Trudgeon has launched his own website. “I am extremely excited about this project,” he says. “I plan to dispel this myth and share my love of music with all the people of South Africa through the powerful medium of the Internet. The website is designed for all music lovers, CD collectors and concert-goers who want to find out more about classical music broadcast on SAfm and who want to explore aspects of the great classics, discover which CD’s to buy and to meet musical personalities.”

One of the first such personalities featured is acclaimed African-American bass Simon Estes who stated that “Music is an international language that transcends all political, religious and racial barriers.” This interview is but one of many featured each month with international and local artists. There is also a weekly column that discusses topical and occasional controversial aspects of music, such as the closure of the National Symphony Orchestra, and opportunity is provided for people to express their own views and opinions concerning classical music. Rodney Trudgeon will also take viewers through symphonies and concertos played on SAfm each week in a feature titled The Magical Mystery Tour which is based on his popular pre-concert talks and lectures.
