NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The University of Natal Durban’s School of Music holds regular lunch-hour concerts in Howard College during the academic term. The School of Music will present two concerts this coming week at 12h15. Admission is free and members of the public are welcome to attend. Tomorrow (March 6), the School will host guitarist Nibs van der Spuy and drummer/percussionist Barry Van Zyl who are collaborating for a series of concerts and a recording project this month. Their compositions are built around Van Zyl's enigmatic, intricate rhythms created on djembe, tubano and bata drums from Cuba, seed pods, a Brazilian tambourine and shekere drums from Ghana. Combined with Nibs' hybrid distillation of acoustic/folk/rock/baroque/celtic/African guitar styles, the result joyously compounds in a cutting improvisational edge which involves a tightrope interplay between music, culture and the two musicians. Bits and Bytes from Stuttgart is the title of the concert on Wednesday (March 8). Ulrich Suesse presents recent works by Jens Schroth, Maciej Walczack, Matthias Herman and Ulrich himself.
