NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. BIG Concerts, 567 CapeTalk and Talk Radio 702 have announced that international chart-toppers Il Divo have confirmed South African dates during their upcoming world tour. The South African leg of the tour will see them performing at the majestic Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town on February 26 and at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg on March 1 2007. They will not be visiting Durban. Il Divo’s sell-out 86-date world tour earlier this year saw them playing to over 500,000 fans across the UK, USA, Europe and Australia, and led to an invitation from the legendary Barbra Streisand to join her on her US tour. They also recorded the official anthem for this year’s FIFA World Cup, and performed in front of an International audience of over a billion people. Il Divo was created by the infamous Simon Cowell who, after listening to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman's rendition of Con Te Partirò, realised the new appreciation for lyrical voices and classical music. He decided to form a multinational quartet that sounded like The Three Tenors and looked like Armani models! His two-year search ended in December 2003, when the fourth member of Il Divo was signed. The speed of their success is unparalleled. Il Divo is now firmly established on the world stage, breaking all the rules and records in the process. In just two years, the international operatic super-group has sold more than 13 million albums, had 26 No.1 chart positions, and received more than 104 Platinum and Gold awards world-wide. Their self-titled debut album broke Led Zeppelin’s 25-year record of being the only band to achieve a number 1 album without a commercial single release. Their second album, Ancora, entered the US and UK charts at number 1 and confirmed them as one of the biggest acts in the world. Siempre, their third album, was released world-wide on the 27th of November and is expected to take their meteoric success to another level. Book at Computicket.
