Music maker, Basant Ramachandra died on November 27, bringing to a close the life of one of Durban’s most well-known classical Indian musicians who was also at home in the contemporary genre. Respected for his skill on the tabla, Basant Ramachandra was just as at home on the harmonium and was also a composer and music director. Mayadevi (Basant’s mother) was a well-known singer from the 1940s through to the 1980s. They were a strong box office combination and performed in such shows as Song of India and Sing Baby Sing directed by Yusuf Kat.
